🗺️ How to use the tactical map

Open the app and allow location access when prompted. Your vessel will appear on the nautical chart automatically. Use the sidebar menu to navigate between modules.

📍 GPS & Location Permissions

Safe Navigation requires location access to function. On iOS: Settings → Privacy → Location Services → SafeNav → While Using App. On Android: tap the lock icon in your browser and enable Location.

🔔 Push Notifications

To receive fog alerts and weather warnings in the background, allow notifications when the app requests them. You can change this later in your device Settings.

📱 Install as PWA (Add to Home Screen)

iPhone/iPad: Open in Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen
Android: Open in Chrome → Menu (⋮) → Add to Home Screen
Installing the PWA enables offline functionality and push notifications.

🆘 Man Overboard (MOB)

Tap and hold the red MOB button for 3 seconds to activate the emergency protocol. This marks the fall position, starts a timer, and calculates the return bearing. A push notification is sent automatically. To cancel, press STOP ALARM in the emergency overlay.

🌫️ Fog System (COLREGS Rule 35)

The system monitors real-time visibility from Open-Meteo Marine API and activates three alert levels: Haze (1-3 km), Moderate Fog (500m-1km), and Dense Fog (<500m). In dense fog, a COLREGS-compliant sound signal is played every 2 minutes.

📓 Automatic Logbook

Go to Menu → Bitácora and press Zarpar / Depart to start recording your voyage. Position, speed and weather are logged every 10 minutes automatically. Export your voyage as CSV or GPX (compatible with OpenCPN, Navionics).

🗺️ Weather Routing

Go to Menu → Enrutamiento Met.. Enter destination coordinates and your vessel's hull speed. The system evaluates departure windows across 7 days and ranks them by safety score (0-100).

Q: My GPS position is showing incorrectly — what can I do?

A: Make sure location permission is set to "While Using App" or "Always". In the app, switch from Simulation Mode to Live Mode using the toggle at the bottom of the sidebar. If the problem persists, close and reopen the app.

Q: The confirmation email went to spam — is that normal?

A: Some email providers may initially filter automated messages. Add noreply@safenavigationapp.com to your contacts to prevent this. Check your spam/junk folder and mark the email as "Not Spam".

Q: Can I use the app offshore without internet?

A: Core navigation features (GPS position, MOB, logbook, harmonic tide calculations) work offline. Weather data and AIS require an internet connection. Cached weather data remains available for 30 minutes after going offline.

Q: How do I reset everything / clear the cache?

A: Add ?purge to the URL: https://safenavigationapp.com?purge. This clears all cached data, service worker, and local storage. Note: this will also delete your saved profile and vessel configuration.

Q: Is my location data sent to any server?

A: No. Your GPS position is processed locally on your device. It is never transmitted to our servers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
